Joseph Banks Secondary College Year 7, 8, and 9 Aspire and Year 10 Space Academy students were given a rare opportunity this week: a face-to-face session with one of Australia’s most recognisable science communicators, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki.
Hosted in the Kaartdijin Room at the Western Australian Space Science Education Centre, the event brought together around 100 students who are passionate about STEM, innovation and the future of our world.
Dr Karl is an Australian author and highly respected science commentator across radio, television and podcasts. He is known for his ability to take complex scientific ideas and explain them in ways that are engaging, memorable and often mind-bending.
From the moment he began speaking, it was clear why he has inspired generations of curious minds. Dr Karl took students on a whirlwind tour through some of the most pressing and fascinating topics in modern science and technology.
Big questions about our future
Across the session, Dr Karl explored a wide range of themes, including:
Artificial Intelligence (AI), its future complications, and what it might mean for jobs and industries.
The global economy and our increasing reliance on big corporations.
Energy use and how we can effectively use green alternatives.
The role of fossil fuels in climate change and the transition to cleaner energy systems.
Groundbreaking science breakthroughs, including injectable DNA therapy and emerging permanent solutions for diabetes.
Caffeine and its effects on the brain at different ages.
What stood out most was not just the breadth of topics, but the depth of knowledge and the sheer number of examples, stories and data points Dr Karl shared. Students were invited to think critically, ask questions and consider their role in addressing global challenges.
A memorable experience for aspiring STEM leaders
The room was buzzing with curiosity as students engaged with new ideas and surprising insights. Many described the talk as “mind-blowing” and “eye-opening”, with several commenting that it helped them see science and technology in a new light.
For our Aspire and Space Academy students, who are already immersed in advanced STEM learning and enrichment opportunities, this experience was a powerful extension of their studies. Hearing directly from a leading science communicator reinforced the importance of evidence-based thinking, lifelong learning and staying curious about how the world works.
Inspiring the next generation
Opportunities like this are more than just a special event – they are pivotal moments that can shape a young person’s aspirations. For the 100 or so students in the room, meeting Dr Karl Kruszelnicki was not only exciting, but also a reminder that science, technology and critical thinking are essential tools for building the future.
