WASSEC was proud to welcome Jaxon Liebeck, Spacecraft Systems Engineer from Firefly Aerospace, for a full day of engagement, exploration and inspiration with our students and school community.
During his visit, Jaxon toured our facilities and gained insight into the innovative programs we deliver in space sciences and cybersecurity. A highlight of the morning was his visit to our Plants in Space Lab, where he observed Year 8 students from Joseph Banks Secondary College actively engaged in hands-on learning, exploring how plants grow in space-like conditions.
The day concluded with two engaging presentations. Jaxon first spoke to Year 11 and 12 Physics and Chemistry students from Joseph Banks Secondary College. He then delivered a second session for students from our feeder primary schools — Banksia Grove Primary School, Grandis Primary School and Spring Hill Primary School — as well as more than 100 schools from across Western Australia who joined via webinar.
Students were captivated by Jaxon’s journey, which began in Manjimup, Western Australia, before undertaking his studies at the University of Texas at Austin. He shared insights from his career, including his work with Lunasonde, NASA, and his current role at Firefly Aerospace.
A standout moment for many was learning about the Blue Ghost Mission and viewing footage of the Moon landing. Jaxon highlighted the collaborative nature of space exploration, emphasising that successful missions are driven by diverse teams with a wide range of skills and backgrounds.
Students enthusiastically participated in a Q&A session, asking thoughtful questions about careers in space, study pathways, and the future of the industry. The opportunity to meet a real-world engineer, collect a signature, and capture a photo made the experience even more memorable.
Jaxon’s visit provided a powerful reminder of what is possible for students in Western Australia. His story demonstrated that global opportunities in the space industry are within reach, regardless of where you begin.
