2025 has been an extraordinary year for the Western Australian Space Science Education Centre (WASSEC). In our inaugural year, we have embraced opportunity, tackled challenges, and celebrated successes whilst focusing on building the centre as a resource for WA.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the many schools and over 1,700 students who directly engaged with WASSEC programs this year. Your enthusiasm and commitment have been the driving force behind our mission. From metropolitan classrooms to remote communities, teachers have embraced innovation and worked alongside us to bring space science, cybersecurity, and advanced technologies into the learning experience. A special mention to the 7,913 students who have engaged with our outreach through Mission Patch competitions, STEM Showcase events, conferences and events throughout the year.
Our collaborations with industry leaders, tertiary institutions, government agencies, and research bodies have been instrumental in shaping programs that are relevant, rigorous, and aligned with curriculum and future workforce needs. These collaborations have enabled us to embed skills in Biology, Communication, Cybersecurity, Robotics, Geology, and Astronomy, ensuring students are prepared for the opportunities of tomorrow.
At the heart of our success is the engagement and collaboration of schools, teachers, and partners across the state, particularly those at Joseph Banks Secondary College who have contributed strongly to the design, implementation and review of our innovative STEM programs. Together, we have created authentic, future-focused learning experiences that inspire students and strengthen STEM education in Western Australia.
I would also like to recognise the engagement and commitment of our Advisory Board members in 2025. Your thoughtful contributions, advice and industry expertise is valued and necessary as we build WASSEC from strength to strength.
A heartfelt thank you to Gary Hale who departs our board this year and a warm welcome to our new members, Martin Van Kranendonk and Danail Obreshkow. I look forward to working alongside you all in 2026.
Throughout this report, you will see many celebrations and highlights of the ongoing work at WASSEC. As part of our commitment to the students, staff and schools in WA, we have:
- Delivered statewide STEM programs to students across diverse contexts, adapting to curriculum priorities and individual learning needs.
- Supported teachers through hosting professional learning events and satellite programs, enhancing confidence and capability in emerging STEM fields.
- Strengthened pathways by integrating career opportunities and real-world learning in our programs, connecting students to real-world careers and the skills required to succeed.
- Built strategic alliances that provided students with authentic engagement opportunities and educators with cutting-edge knowledge.
As we move into 2026, our focus will be on deepening these relationships and expanding our reach through new programs and innovations. We will continue to collaborate with schools and educators, refine our programs based on feedback and data, and explore new technologies and partnerships that will keep WASSEC at the forefront of STEM education.
